Conceptual Designs

Concept designs are the initial big picture ideas. Early preliminary designs can show what problems may be solved and how the design may solve them. They can also show what might not work and what can be modified earlier in the design process before it becomes a costly option during construction. They can be refined until the desired result is reached.

In early 2021 CSX told the City of Hamilton it could either pay to relocate the historic structure or it would be demolished in March 2022. I volunteered my time and worked with the city to show some  relocation concepts. I also took it one step further to show some possible uses for the historic building that has seen no less than 5 Presidents in it’s 150 plus years. In June 2021m City council approved the funds to move the historic Hamilton Train Depot building.

In 2016 I was part of the winning Columbus team for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) $40 million Smart City Challenge. Out of 78 applicant citiess, Columbus’ plans were deemed the best at meeting the goal of creating “ideas for an integrated, first-of-its-kind smart transportation system that would use data, applications, and technology to help people and goods move more quickly, cheaply, and efficiently.” In addition to the winning $40 from the USDOT, there was an additional $10 million from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, and ultimately Smart Columbus, grew that amount to $500 million from private partners. As part of the team I created models and animations, and received a commendation from the mayor. These images were created while employed at EMH&T

Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with many great teams on a wide variety of projects. The projects always start with a concept that is worked and reworked to achieve the final goal of the client.  Included here are a wide variety of conceptual designs I created as part of these projects.
